He clearly understood the importance of internationalisation in accelerating competitiveness, advocating globalisation even before the spread of the internet and despite geopolitical obstacles. As well as having obvious links with institutions in Western Europe and North America, he was one of the first membrane scientists to collaborate with universities and research institutions in Eastern countries, including Japan, China, South Korea and India, as well as in the Middle East, North Africa and South Africa.
We are grateful that we had the opportunity to meet Professor Drioli on several occasions, particularly when organising several editions of the MELPRO conference. He accepted our invitation to serve as chair of the scientific committee. We were greatly honoured by his plenary presentation at the PERMEA & MELPRO 2016 conference in Prague.
We are participating in Membrane Day via a competition that we announced in September. The competition is open for Czech university students at master's or doctoral level. To take part, each participant must send their thesis on a topic related to membrane technologies to info@czemp.cz by 31 December 2025 at the latest. The conditions for participating in the competition are described on the CZEMP – Membrane Day website. A committee of leading domestic and international membrane experts will review all papers by 31 March 2026 and select the three best entries (first, second and third place). The results will be announced publicly on the CZEMP website on Prof. Drioli's birthday, 14 April 2026 (#MembraneDay).
The participant whose work is ranked 1^(st) will receive a prize of EUR 1,000. Within 14 days of the results being announced, the competition winner will send us a video presentation of their work. Afterwards this will be sent to the European Membrane Society (EMS) committee. After evaluating activities from around the world, EMS representatives may also award some of the local winners.
